Parent Mentor

parent mentorThe Arc's Parent Mentor Program works with families who have children with disabilities who are in school and who need help understanding and accessing educational services. We also provide information about the resources available in the community for families who have a child with a disability and help the family access those services.

Parents are faced with a myriad of challenges when their child enters the educational system; these challenges can be multiplied if their child has a disability. The Parent Mentor Program supports the efforts of parents in securing the most appropriate educational services for their child. Our mentors are sensitive to the needs of families and are extensively trained about special education rules, best practices, creative problem solving, and conflict resolution.

The program intervenes with school districts in the Wilmington area, to ensure an appropriate education is provided for each child based on the goals developed by the parents with the assistance of the mentors.
